Anna Uddenberg left the debut of "Continental Breakfast," her latest show at the Meredith Rosen Gallery, in awe. To her, New York was synonymous with noisy, raucous crowds. "But I've never been to a quieter opening," recalls the Swedish artist during a Zoom call. "He was quiet. I was a little surprised at how obedient everyone was." Uddenberg is back in Berlin, where he lives, and reflecting on the post-jetlag experience. She credits the silence to the artists who activated the show's sculptural elements on opening night; perhaps the public found them intimidating. In their bland skirt suits and hair in prim buns, performance artists Sally von Rosen and Mădălina Stănescu channeled flight attendants or hotel concierges, leading and assisting attendees through the cramped space of 80th Street. from the gallery, carpeted in Chase credit card blue for the occasion.
Amid this herding, von Rosen and Stănescu alternated climbing and tying, Premium Economy and T-Top Tummy Tuck, Uddenberg's sculptures on view through April 29. With these, the artist has brought together steel, leather, faux rattan, and acrylic glass to generate pseudo-architectural structures that evoke airport massage chairs, Segways, and subway poles as much as they echo BBL's recovery pillows and crutches. These works are a remarkable departure from the overextended, hypersexualized faceless female figures Uddenberg became known for in the late 2010s. It's a change from the superficiality of selfie culture, "it-girls" and mindfulness. instrumentalized to the visual language of what the artist calls "non-spaces".
